Portico d’Ottavia Urban Study

Academic Proposal

This group academic studio project completed under the direction of architect Michael Graves seeks to revitalize the core of the Jewish Ghetto in Rome. Located adjacent to the Theatre of Marcellus and the synagogue of Rome, the ancient Portico d’Ottavia was used as a fish market in the Middle Ages. This design proposal reinstates this landmark as a multi-use urban space with market buildings surrounding a new amphitheater piazza. A new residential building fills in the vacant urban fabric to the west of the amphitheater, accommodating the need for more neighborhood housing.
